Avon/ Hermes Novels

Avon Originals

In 1972, US publisher Avon began releasing a series of prose novels based upon various The Phantom strips. While they all claimed to be by Lee Falk on the cover, other writers actually worked on some volumes. The series has the overall title of The Story of The Phantom. For more info on the novels, see the Phantom Wiki.

Hermes Press Reprints

In 2016 Hermes Press reprinted the entire Story of The Phantom series. For all intents and purposes they are exactly the same as the Avon printings, albeit slightly larger and with Hermes' logo replacing that of Avon's on the cover. I have a full set of the Hermes' printings, but include here only vols 12,13 and 15 as they are the only volumes I'm missing from the original set.

International Releases

I also have in my collection a German printing of vol. 5: The Golden Circle, published by Kelter Abenteuer. I'm unsure how many other, if any, non-English languages the books were released in.

Books - Various

Lee Falk: Storyteller

Lee Falk: Storyteller collects together many interviews, short stories, essays and other writing by Lee Falk, as well as memories and writings on him and his characters. It was produced by the Scandinavian chapter of the Lee Falk Memorial Bengalla Explorers' Club and came in at 348 pages. Originally released in Scandinavian, and English version was also produced. It was released in September, 2011, just in time for Falk's 100th birthday as well as the 75th anniversary of the The Phantom strip.

The Phantom Unmasked

The Phantom Unmasked: America's First Superhero is an exploration of The Phantom's success outside his own country and why he might appeal to international audiences more so than American. It also looks at the history of the superhero genre, how The Phantom influenced it and the culture of the countries where he is most popular. Written by Kevin Patrick as his thesis, he interviewed many creators and phans for his book - including me!

Defenders of the Earth Related

Publications related to the Defenders of the Earth animated series.

Activity Books

There have been several Defenders-related children's activity/ colouring books released from various publishers.

Children's Books

Journal (Unofficial)

The DotE Annual was originally released by Marvel UK in 1987. It collected the first two issues of the US Marvel mini as well as details on characters, vehicles, machines and other aspects of the show. For this "journal" some enterprising person has put together one of the original Annual pages, along with a good amount of blank and lined paper between, and rebound it with wire spiral. While it is a shame that this process has in essence destroyed the original book and damaged some of the amazing art, it is none the less a very interesting item.

Frew Publications (Non-Comic)

Over the years Australian Phantom comics publisher Frew Publication has released a few non-comic publications, mostly for reference information.

Index: The First 50 Years of Frew

As the nae suggests, this contains information about Frew's Phantom publishing history from their start in 1948 through to 1998. The information included within included a complete publishing chronology up to 1998, a Lee Falk chronology, Egmont (Fantomen) stories Frew had published, a list of the feature articles that had appeared in some comic issues, and much more.

The Phantom Project Kit

The Project Kit was basically a "how to" on making a Phantom comic. It includes articles on how to draw the Phantom by artist Glenn Ford, advice on writing a Phantom story by publisher/ writer Jim Shepherd and other behind-the-scenes articles.

Frew 2000 Promotional Pamphlet

A short pamphlet promoting Frew Publications' The Phantom comic. The cover recreates the publisher's 2000 Christman Annual, while inside is information about the comic and what to expect in 2001.

Magazines & Pamphlets

1996 Movie Related

Magazines released coinciding with or in the lead up to the 1996 The Phantom film.

Australian Government Publications

The Phantom Enrols & Votes and Vote #1: The Phantom were educational pamphlets produced by the Australian government to help educate citizens, particularly Indigenous Australians, on how to enrol as a voter and vote in the Australian parliamentary elections (Enrolls & Votes) as well as run for their local council elections (Vote #1). A similar release, The Wisdom of The Phantom, was produced by the Family Court of Australia explaining how and why people may wish to use court services.

Various Magazines

Phantom Club Newsletters

Before the internet, the best way for phans to stay up-to-date with their favourite characters and comics were fan clubs and the newsletters they produced. The Phantom has had several fan clubs all across the world, but here are the club newsletters that I have in my collection. For those interested, many of these can now be read digitals via ChronicleChamber.com's Phantom Preservation Project.

Official Phantom Fan Club of Australia

Created to coincide with the release of Frew Publication's 1000th issue (not to be confused with issue #1000), the Official Phantom Fan Club Australia was managed by a company known as Famous Faces who also ran clubs for Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe and others. Based in Melbourne, the fan club lasted until 1999. A newsletter sent to all members was originally supposed to be quarterly, but no more than three were ever released within a year. The last issue was released in 1998.

Friends of The Phantom

Friends of The Phantom was an American fan club that ran from 1993 to 2002. A total of 23 newsletters were released featuring interviews with some of the biggest names in the Phantom creator community.

Phantom Diaries

Mallon Publishing

Published almost annually, the Mallon Phantom diary has become something of a staple for Aussie Phantom phans at Christmas time. There were no diaries produced for 1999, 2001, 2002 or 2019. The diaries were released as large hardcovers from 1995 - 1997, containing lots of background information and trivia about The Phantom.1998 saw a move to a softcover ring-bound format. Rather than trivia, these format featured cover art from Phantom publications across the world. 2005 saw another format change which combined the ringbound format with a hard cover. These 2005+ diaries kept the cover art, but also had Phantom trivia dispersed without.

While the series has continued, it has become prohibitively expensive.

Trielle Movie Diary

Released to coincide with the 1996 The Phantom movie, published by Trielle in Australia. It contains various Phantom trivia as behind-the-scenes info on the film.

Miscellaneous

Johnson's Price Guide

Released primarily as a value guide to Frew Publications The Phantom comic issues, with three volumes being released. The first was fairly bare bones with only Frew comic issues being listed, the second volume extended things to international comics and memorabilia while the third volume updated lisitng from volume 2 including newer items, as well as came with a CD-ROM housing images of some of the items. For those interested, you can read a review I wrote on the third volume for ChronicleChamber.com HERE.
